The study of similarities in embryonic development across multiple species helps scientists prove and understand the evolution of species over time. By dissecting a dicot lima bean seed and a monocot corn seed, it is possible to observe the different parts of the seed and its embryo. Moving on to more complex animal embryos, students will visually compare patterns in embryonic development that cannot be observed in the anatomy of fully-grown adult organisms.
