It’s killing season in parts of the United States plagued by the beautiful, but dreaded, spotted lanternfly. The spotted lanternfly is a planthopper with grayish-black spotted forewings, and reddish-black spotted hindwings. Native to northern China, it was first detected as an exotic species in South Korea in 2004, and achieved a new continental record after its discovery by the Pennsylvania State Department of Agriculture in 2014.
